While we successfully achieved our fifth consecutive year of operational profitability in 2016, it didn’t come without challenges. Hurricane Matthew, wildfires in Tennessee and our usual claim activities all did their part to challenge us and make sure our team had plenty of work and practice this past year. Despite such challenges, 2016 was another strong year for us with many, many highlights.
First and foremost was our 100th anniversary celebration. Over 5,000 people spent part of a warm, beautiful, June Saturday in Lansing to recognize our company’s past and encourage its future. To me, this was simply astounding. Next, we can’t overlook the continued upward climb on the Fortune 500 listing, coming in at 398. This was our 14th consecutive year in this elite group of companies.
New milestones were set in written premium, policy count and in our company surplus – our financial backbone, which is outlined in the report below. Our Life Company also enjoyed a successful year and provides billions of dollars of protection to thousands of lives across the country. We’ve retained our A.M. Best rating of A++ (Superior), making this the 45th consecutive year we’ve received their highest possible rating. Add to these results the progress experienced with our newest member of the family, Atlantic Casualty, and there is much to be proud of.
As we close out our centennial year, our eyes are set on the next 100 years. Central to our future (as in our past) are our agency partners and our associates. Without the support and trust of the more than 6,200 agencies who represent us, our story would be quite different. We thank them for this. And without a dedicated and committed team of associates, both past and present, we would have no story to tell at all. Their contributions are immeasurable.
To all, our commitment to superior products and service remains our pledge going forward. We are honored to be a part of your family’s or business’s financial plan.
